New Gilston & Woodside

NEW GILSTON (Backmuir of New Gilston)

New Gilston is as small village that lies 3 miles (5KM) north of Upper Largo surrounded by agricultural land. It has the distinction of being the highest inhabited village in Fife.

At one time this was an area of small mines but as the mines closed so too the population declined.

Today there is a Village Hall in the centre of the village that provides a meeting place for various community activities and events throughout the year. There is a pre school Nursery and Primary school that serves the village and surrounding rural area.

WOODSIDE

Just a short distance to the west is the roadside hamlet of Woodside. The houses here are on the north side of the road that runs the length of the hamlet facing south and Largo Law.

An interesting feature as you enter the hamlet from the west is a road side sign that warns motorist that ducks could be crossing. The road is straight and a temptation to exceed the speed limit – watch out for the ducks.
